Friends of the Library

What is a Friend of the Library?

Friends are people who know that a community with a first rate library is a better place to live.

Friends bring together involved and caring people who are willing to work for an excellent library.

The Friends of the Library were started in September 1993, with the lofty goal of helping to settle the library in a new home.  Twelve years later the president of Friends handed a $28,000 check to the library for the children's room in the new library.

What do the Friends of the Library do?

Friends support the library in dozens of ways, from monetary support of programs and materials to volunteering at children's and teen's programs to advocacy of the library and library mission.

In the last five years the Friends have spent over $15,500 in supplies and materials for the library.

Each month the Friends purchase 3 new DVDs.

In 2004 they purchased 2 new Free to the Public Internet Access Computers.

Purchased a popcorn machine that is enjoyed at almost every Library event.

Every summer the friends provide $500 in prizes for each child who participates in the Summer Reading Program.

Sponsored Read Across America Annually.

Provide programs during National Library Week.

Hold special story hours and support special projects.

Why does the Library need Friends?

The library is one of the main cultural and informational centers of our community.  The library is tax supported, but there are many important items that are not included in the library's budget.  Friends help to provide funding for extra services and programs.

How can you be a Friend of the Marion Public Library?

Give the gift of time by serving on the Friends board or by attending meetings.  (Only a few meetings a year!)

Give the gift of money by becoming a member and/or donating to one of our annual fundraisers.

Give the gift of talent by lending us your creative ideas to keep the library one of the best places in Marion!

Come to the library to fill out a membership form, or to ask any other questions that you might have.  Currently, your Friends of the Library leadership is:
